Coach Dave Jennings' Miami University women's swimming and diving team had a successful opening of its 2008-09 season, splitting a double-dual meet Thursday at MU's Nixon Natatorium.
Miami defeated Purdue by a score of 171.00-129.00, but lost to nationally ranked Louisville, 185.00-114.00. Louisville topped Purdue, 197.00-102.00, in the other match-up.
Miami's Kasey Carpenter, a transfer from the University of Wisconsin, sparkled in her first competition as a RedHawk. She won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:01.57, the third-fastest time in Miami history. Carpenter placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of :57.51, Miami's eighth-best time in history.
Other top performances included ALLISON STEVENS' second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.05), Kelsey Vehr's time of 1:05.58 in the 100-yard breaststroke and her 2:22.29 effort in the 200-breaststroke, Alyson Schmidt's :23.78 in the 50-yard free (just 0:00.06 off her personal best) and :51.76 in the 100-yard free, KELSEY ANAGNOS' second-place finish in the one-meter diving competition, Nicole Roddenbery's second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (57:21).
Miami's women and men host Xavier on Saturday at 1 p.m.
