Ypsilanti, Mich. - Heading into the final day of the 2002 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships leading Ohio, 499-488, Miami had 11 swimmers in four events make Saturday evening's finals while the Bobcats qualified 13. There are no preliminary heats for the 1,650 freestyle, in which the RedHawks have two of the MAC's top three swimmers.
Miami placed three swimmers in the finals of the 200 backstroke, including freshman Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy), who took second in 2:04.33. Sophomore Emily Maier (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and freshman Katie Miles (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) made the "B" Final, placing 12th and 15th, respectively.
Already having won the 50 free, senior Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) will make a run at the 100 free crown, after coming in second in the morning session with a 51.27 clocking. She will be joined by junior Jackie Hiltman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), who swam to a fifth-place finish, while junior Kristen Sivard (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) will go in the "B" Final after placing 15th.
The RedHawks suffered a big blow in the 200 breast when junior Lyndsay Barnes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar), who almost certainly would have been a finalist, was disqualified. As it is, they have one swimmer in each final race. After capturing the 400 breast on Day Two, senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) hopes to become a double winner as she took the top spot, while sophomore Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) looks to pick up some valuable points following her 15th-place finish.
Another potential champion, in the 200 butterfly, is freshman
Michelle Reynolds (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming), who slid into second place. Junior
Heather Kelley (Milwaukee, Wisc./Divine Savior Holy Angels) also made the "A" final by virtue of her seventh-place finish. Rounding out Miami's flyers is sophomore
Katie Scott (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh), who squeaked into the finals after coming in 16th.
The 1,650 free, which will begin at around 5 p.m., is one of the RedHawks' strongest events and one of the Bobcats' weakest. Sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), who already has the 500 free championship to her credit, and freshman Cara Magee (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) enter the finals as the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. Ohio does not have a swimmer ranked in the top 14 in the event.
The 10-meter diving preliminaries start at 1 p.m., while the swimming and diving finals commence at 7 p.m.
