Ypsilanti, Mich - Miami's women's swimming and diving team will have 15 finalists in five swimming events Friday evening at the 2002 Mid-American Conference Championships, while Ohio, the team the RedHawks are battling for the crown, had 17 swimmers qualify in Friday's morning session.
Leading the way for Miami is junior Lyndsay Barnes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar), the only RedHawk swimmer to make the "A" Final in two events. She came in second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.84 and seventh in the 100 butterfly, clocking a 56.96.
Sophomore Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) will compete in the 100 breast "B" Final on the strength of her 14th-place finish.
In the 100 fly, freshman Michelle Reynolds (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) touched the wall in 56.90, good for fifth place, while senior Colleen Rambasek (Kettering, Ohio/Alter) and junior Heather Kelley (Milwaukee, Wisc./Divine Savior Holy Angels) made the "B" Final by virtue of their 11th- and 12-place finishes, respectively.
Half of the eight "A" race finalists in the 200 free are Miamians. Sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), junior Jackie Hiltman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), freshman Cara Magee (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) and senior Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) occupied the fourth-through-seventh spots, respectively, in the preliminaries.
Miami's lone representative in the "B" Final is freshman Andrea Hocevar (Richmond Heights, Ohio/Hawken School), who came in 14th with a 1:54.48 clocking.
The RedHawks appear to be overmatched in the 400 individual medley and 100 back, in which the Bobcats have a total of eight finalists to Miami's three. Senior
Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and freshman
Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) took third and fourth, respectively, in the 400 IM, while only Rambasek made the finals of the 100 back, following her 11th-place finish.
Preliminaries for three-meter diving begins at 1 p.m. and finals for all events start at 7 p.m.
