YPSILANTI, Mich. - Miami's women's swimming and diving team leads Ohio, 236-210, after the first day of competition at the 2002 Mid-American Conference Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. Sophomore Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and senior Kelly Janura (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) were crowned champions in the 500 freestyle and 50 free, respectively.

As anticipated, it is shaping up to be a two-team race, as the third-place team, Eastern Michigan, is already 55 points back of the Bobcats.

Miranda became the RedHawks' first winner at the meet as she touched the wall in 4:52.35, which hit the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard and is just .35 seconds off the school record time she posted at the 2001 MAC Championships, where she finished runner-up. It also broke the two-year stranglehold Ohio's Kim Van Selm had in the event. Van Selm placed fifth this time around.

Also in the 500 free, freshmen Michelle Reynolds (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) and Cara Magee (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) took third and fourth in 4:54.93 and 4:55.02, respectively. Both times made the NCAA "B" Standard. Rounding out the quartet of RedHawks in the "A" Final is sophomore Elizabeth Roble (Englewood, Colo./Kent), who came in eighth in a time of 5:00.79.

Swimming in the "B" Final, sophomore Katie Scott (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) placed 12th overall, completing the race in 5:03.11.

After seventh-, fifth- and second-place finishes the last three years, Janura finally broke through in the 50, reaching the deck in 23.41. The 1999 50 free champion, senior Colleen Rambasek (Kettering, Ohio/Alter), took home a sixth-place finish with a 23.88 clocking.

The two RedHawks in the "B" Final, junior Jackie Hiltman (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Christel Frantz (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake), ended up with 11th- and 16-place finishes, respectively.

In the 200 individual medley, senior Emily Nayes (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) placed third with a time of 2:03.26, which provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships and lowers the school record she set in the preliminaries by almost a full second, and freshman Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) finished fifth, clocking in at 2:05.61. Taking 14th in 2:09.82 was junior Heather Kelley (Milwaukee, Wisc./Divine Savior Holy Angels).

The most surprising outcome of the day came in one-meter diving. Freshman Sara Gonso (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), the top seed by a considerable point margin, came in fourth with a score of 253.05, while the No. 4 seed, sophomore Heidi Willemssen (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville), claimed second with 268.80 points.

Both of Miami's relay teams, the 200 free and 400 medley, came through with third-place finishes. The 400 squad of Lamb, Nayes, Rambasek and Janura broke the school record by more than a second, while the 200 collective of Janura, Rambasek, Hiltman and junior Kristen Sivard (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) missed the school standard by .05 seconds.

Competition resumes tomorrow with swimming preliminaries at 11 a.m., three-meter diving prelims at 1 p.m. and finals at 7 p.m.
