OXFORD, Ohio - Junior Kelsey Vehr turned in the top qualifying time in the 200-yard breaststroke and senior Kasey Carpenter claimed second in the 200-yard backstroke, as 15 RedHawks qualified for the final session of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Vehr's 2:13.51 in the 200-yard breaststroke earned her an NCAA "B" cut, her third of the weekend, and broke a pool-record previously held by fellow junior Megan Brunn. Brunn will join her in the finals of the 200-breast after turning in a third-place time of 2:15.48.
Carpenter also earned NCAA Championship consideration as she broke her own school-record in the 200-back with a 1:58.56. Freshman Leah Thornton will join her in finals after qualifying sixth with a time of 2:01.43. Thornton will also compete in the 200-yard butterfly after qualifying 16th. Fellow freshman Maegan O'Connor was the top qualifier for the RedHawks in the 200-fly, touching the wall in 2:02.14 to earn the fifth seed in finals.
Other qualifiers for the RedHawks were freshman Jenny Warmolts (ninth) and junior Miranda Kaltenborn (15th) in the 200-back; freshman Bekka Westrick (10th), sophomore Sarah Radke (tie-14th) and senior Allison Way (tie-14th) in the 100-yard freestyle; senior Claire Fogarty (11th) and freshman Stacie Clagg (14th) in the 200-breast; and redshirt freshmen Claire Dickmann (10th) and Brittney Rohr (15th) in the 200-fly.
Senior Kelsey Anagnos and freshman Danica Roskos will also compete in Saturday night's 3-meter diving finals after qualifying for the event on Friday.
The final session of the MAC Championships is Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center. Events will be the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 3-meter diving and 400-yard freestyle relay.
