OXFORD, Ohio -- Late victories by butterflyer Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN), diver CORY BANGS (Monument, CO) and the 400 freestyle relay team broke a close dual meet wide open as Miami defeated defending MAC champion Toledo, 163.5 to 136.5, at MU's Nixon Aquatic Center.

Top-ranked in the latest Mid-Major Division 1 Poll, the RedHawks improved their overall record to 9-1 and their Mid-American Conference mark to 4-0. 

With the score tied after 12 events, Coach Dave Jennings' RedHawks went to work. O'Connor swam to victory in the 100 butterfly (55.99), with teammate Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) finishing second.

In event 14, one-meter diving, Miamians placed 1-2-3. Sophomore Bangs, Nikki Craft (Bay Village) and Lisa Werwinski (Canton) gathered 16 of the 19 points that were awarded.

Toledo's Carly Harter won the 200 IM, but RedHawks Megan Brunn (Mansfield) and Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati) negated that victory was placing second and third.

Miami's 400 freestyle relay squad--Westrick, Maddie Kete (Bay Village), Margaret Eppright (Shaker Heights) and Chelsey Bruington (Mission Viejo, CA)--took the 11 first-place points in the final event to give Miami its 27-point victory.

The day began on a positive note as Miami's relay foursome of Leah Thornton (Helena, AL), Vehr, O'Connor and Kete edged out Toledo's A team by 13 one-hundreths of a second (3;47.72 to 3:47.85).

Thornton was a winner in event four, the 100 backstroke (57.03), defeating Toledo's Christina Noens by more than a second.

O'Connor posted her first of two victories in event six by touching the wall in a winning time of 2:04.09. Teammate Kelsey Mallon (Wheaton, IL) placed second (2:05.93).

Westrick and Kete went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle, swimming respective times of 23.91 and 23.96.

Craft won the three-meter diving event over teammates Werwinski and Bangs as the RedHawks collected 16 points.

Top individual scorers for the RedHawks in the win over Toledo were O'Connor with 18 points, Westrick with 16 points, Craft with 13 points and Bangs with 12.

Others who contributed points were Thornton and Brunn (11 apiece), Vehr (10), Kete (8), Werwinski (7), Bruington (6), Mallon and Jenny Warmolts (Upper Arlington) (4 each), Miranda Kaltenborn (Memphis, TN) and Cynthia Donovan (Cincinnati) (3 each), STACEY CLAGG (Canton) (2.5), Mandi Grandjean (Canton) and Sarah Bullock (Louisville, KY) (2 each), and Molly Tyler (Birmingham), KAYLA SCOTT (St. Charles, IL), Laura Krueger (Cincinnati), Margaret Eppright (Shaker Heights) and Nicole Roddenbery (Peachtree City, GA).

Miami wraps up the dual meet portion of its season next Saturday at home against arch-rival Ohio. The first event begins at 1 p.m.
