Head diving coach Todd Spohn enters his 21st season in Oxford as the mentor of both the men's and women's diving teams.
An 11-time Mid-American Conference Diving Coach of the Year, Spohn guided his divers to a sweep of the conference specialty awards in 2006, with Chris Heaton and Christin Eberst winning the MAC Male and Female Diver of the Year awards, respectively. Both divers additionally broke school records in the three-meter dive, while Eberst advanced to the NCAA Diving Championships for the third time in her career. Last season Eberst posted a 19th-place finish nationally on the one-meter board, her best highest finish ever at the NCAA Championships.
Over the past seven seasons, Spohn's female divers have tallied five MAC diving titles, including Eberst's one-meter gold medal in 2005. Since 2002, Spohn's divers have collected nine top-three MAC finishes, with Eberst posting seven of those nine performances.
In addition to Eberst, Miami alumnae Kelly Harper and Cassie Eakins rank among his top pupils as they swept the one- and three-meter boards at the MAC Championships in back-to-back seasons. Harper took home both titles in 1999, with Eakins repeating the feat in 2000. They are the only two divers in Miami history to win MAC diving championships on both boards in back-to-back years. Harper and Eakins additionally collected MAC Diver of the Year honors and Miami Athlete of the Year accolades in their respective seasons.
Spohn has been honored as the conference's diving coach of the year eight times since 1998, and, in a four-year span from 1998-01, Spohn won six of the eight possible MAC Coach of the Year awards. He won the award three times with the men's team from 1999-2001 and three times with women's team from 1998-2000.
Spohn earned his bachelor's degree in 1986 and his master's degree in sport studies in 1993, both from Miami. During his diving career at Miami, Spohn was a six-time MAC finalist and three-time NCAA Zone Championship qualifier. Since his graduation, Spohn has competed and medaled internationally at the Pan Pacific Masters Diving Championship. He also has performed as a professional high diver.
Spohn and his wife, Monica, live in Oxford. They have three children: Hannah (18), Andy (17) and Molly (14).
