CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced its Softball Academic All-MAC Team Thursday. Miami University was represented by senior first baseman Kelly Cabana. The gerontology major graduated earlier this month with a 3.62 GPA and will be attending medical school in the fall.
Cabana appeared in 41 games this season, starting 31 at first base. She hit a career-high .253, making a strong comeback after missing most of her junior season due to injury. She also recorded career highs in runs scored (4), total hits (20) and RBI (10).
Cabana was previously honored with the President’s Distinguished Service Award. That award, which is given to only 15 seniors campus-wide each year, was given to her for her work in the campus cancer awareness project.
A total of 18 players were named to this year’s Academic All-MAC Team. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
