Miami Softball Earns No. 4 Seed in 2007 MAC Tournament
May 6, 2007
CLEVELAND -- With a pair of decisive wins against Buffalo on Friday and a thrilling extra innings win against Kent State on Saturday, Miami University's softball team clinched the No. 4 seed in the 2007 Mid-American Conference Tournament. The RedHawks will face the No. 5 seed Central Michigan Chippewas at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9 at Currie Stadium in Midland, Mich.
Depending on the outcome of the game, Miami will face either the winner or the loser of the No. 1 seed Kent State versus No. 8 seed Northern Illinois game on Thursday. The winners of Wednesday's games will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday with the losers of each game meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Miami split a doubleheader with Central Michigan in Oxford on April 27, winning the first game, 3-1, before dropping the nightcap, 4-1. The RedHawks and Chippewas have met five previous times in the conference tournament, with Miami winning four of the five games.
The RedHawks are making their fifth Mid-American Conference Tournament appearance and first since seizing the 2005 MAC Tournament Championship. Miami's opening round game will mark the RedHawks' first tournament game since defeating Marshall, 5-2, in the 2005 MAC Finals, which propelled Miami to the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.
Miami enters the tournament as arguably the hottest team in the conference, having won 12 of its last 14 games. Included in those 12 wins are a sweep of the West Division Champion and No. 2 seed Eastern Michigan and a split with MAC Regular Season and East Division Champion Kent State. Miami is one of only three teams in the conference to defeat Kent State this season, which is the defending tournament champion.
