OXFORD, Ohio (April 28)--Mary Neal scored the tying run in the seventh inning against Akron for the Miami softball team to send the game in to extra innings. Unfortunately, it was the last run for the RedHawks as the Zips went on to score three runs in the top of the ninth inning to end the game 7-4 in favor of Akron.

Akron's Tracee McCoy hit a solo home run in the first inning to help the Zips jump out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. A three-run rally in the fourth inning by the RedHawks, however, put Miami back in the game with a 3-2 advantage.

In the fourth inning, Erin Taylor nailed an RBI single with bases loaded to send in Jody Kermode, who was pinch running, to place Miami's first run on the board. Amy Dudley followed by knocking in Laura Fulton. Then, Keri Brisnehan was hit by a Sherell Watson pitch, which scored Angie Gerber.

Akron tied the game 3-3 in the next inning when Tiffany McCoy tagged a double to score Angie Hill. The Zips took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh when Leticia Gamboa scored on a wild pitch by Abbey Arnold.

Neal singled for the RedHawks to start the seventh inning and then successfully stole second. She advanced to third and scored as two consecutive RedHawk batters grounded out.

Neither team collected a run or a hit in the eighth inning, but the Zips went on to win the game, scoring three runs off four hits and two errors in the top of the ninth.

Lisa Keenan picked up the win for the Zips, relieving Watson after 4.0 innings, while Tennille Bishop earned the loss for Miami after relieving Arnold in the eighth inning. Taylor and Chrissy Martini each went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the RedHawks

Miami drops to 5-10 in league action and 16-25 overall, while Akron improves to 7-7 in the MAC and 22-18 overall. The two teams will clash again tomorrow (April 29) in a double-header starting a 1 p.m. It also will be Miami's Senior Day where the RedHawks will honor Dudley and Bishop in their final contests at RedHawk Diamond.
