AKRON, Ohio (April 6) -- Breaking out of its nine-inning hitting slump, Miami University's softball team posted five hits over the final three innings of the game and scored one run to top the University of Akron (11-14; 4-4 MAC), 1-0, in the first game of a three-game weekend series.

The RedHawks (13-17; 4-2 MAC) notched three straight singles in the fifth inning to record the one and only run of the game. With two outs, Laura Fulton tagged Miami's first hit in nine innings of play to spark the RedHawks. Erin Taylor, pinch hitting for Amber Arnold, followed with a single. Then Jessica Zogaib singled to score Maggie Cousin's, who was running for Fulton. Zogaib, who went 2-for-3 on the day, also belted a double in the seventh inning.

In her first game back from sustaining a broken hand on the first day of the Softball NIT, Keri Brisnehan belted a single in the sixth inning to extend her hitting streak to nine. She has recorded at least one hit in every game she has participated in this season.

Abbey Arnold pitched the complete-game shutout, her fourth of the season, and improved to 6-10 in the circle. She gave up just three hits, walked five, and struck out eight. Three of those strikeouts came in the fourth inning as she retired the first three batters in order.

Miami and Akron battle tomorrow (April 7) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
