Charlotte, N.C. - Miami dropped both games during day one of the 49er Invitational, losing to North Florida in the first game, 11-1, and falling in the second game to tournament host, Charlotte, by a 10-8 score.
Senior captain Halle Popson reached base in seven of her eight plate appearances, singling three times and walking in four other trips to the plate. For the season, Popson has an on-base percentage of .605, with a team-high 12 walks.
Freshman infielder Meghan Mawn also had a productive day at the plate, reaching base five times, including a single, double, and three walks. Combined, Popson and Mawn accounted for six of the RedHawks' nine runs scored in the first day of the tournament.
All of Miami's offense in its game against North Florida came in the first inning, when senior Christine Bills knocked in Popson with a single. Bills ranks second on the team in runs batted in with nine.
The Ospreys took control in the top of the second inning, scoring four runs, and didn't look back from that point on. North Florida would go on to score one run in each of the next three innings, and closed out the game with a four-spot in the sixth inning. UNF now leads the all-time series between the two teams, 2-0.
Miami fought back early in the second game of the day, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Batters one through six (Popson, Mawn, Bills, Robinson, Hogl, and McGivney) each drove in runs through the first two innings.
Charlotte cut Miami's lead to 6-4 in the top half of the third inning, but MU pushed back during the bottom half, scoring two more times, making the score 8-4 through three innings.
The 49ers took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning, as the team batted around and plated five players. Charlotte would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, clinching the team's 10th victory of the season.
