DAYTON, Ohio Miami Universitys softball team moved to 3-4 on the season with a split at the Dayton Invitational. The RedHawks opened their tournament stint with a 1-0 win over Dayton (1-5) and then followed with a 1-3 loss to Wright State (8-4).
Despite posting seven runs in the first game, Miami was able to capitalize on only one against the Flyers. Abbey Arnold (Dana Point, Calif./St. Margarets) hit a single in the second at-bat of the fifth inning. With two outs, Jamie Carey (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) launched a double to score Arnold for the game-winning run. Arnold also pitched all seven innings and evened her record in the circle to 2-2. She gave up only two hits and struck out seven batters.
Miami and Wright State went through five and a half scoreless innings until the Raiders posted three in the bottom of the sixth inning. Miami tried to answer back in the top of the seventh to no avail. The Red and White scored their lone run of the game when Jacqueline Molinaro (Follansbee, W.Va./Brooke) knocked in Jessica Zogaib (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) on a sacrifice hit. Amber Arnold pitched a complete game for the RedHawks, giving up five hits.
Miami continues its stint at the Dayton Invitational on Sunday, facing Cleveland State at 11 a.m. and Valparaiso at 1 p.m.
