MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (March 3, 2000) -- Bouncing back after a 7-4 loss to Western Michigan in the opening game of the Middle Tennessee Invitational, the Miami softball team captured a 2-1 win over host Middle Tennessee in nine innings. Laura Fulton tagged a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to start the RedHawk rally. Chrissy Martini advanced Fulton to second on a sacrifice bunt, then Kristina Mortaloni belted a double to knock in Fulton for the winning run to end the game.
Middle Tennessee opened up a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, but the RedHawks answered in the sixth when Laura Fulton knocked in Erin Kucera.
Fulton led the 'Hawks at the plate going 2-for-4 with and RBI and the game-winning run. In the circle, Amber Arnold pitched all nine innings, throwing seven strikeouts. She improved her record to 3-0 with the win. The run the Lady Raiders scored was not an earned run. Defensively, Keri Brisnehan made two outstanding catches in center field to thwart the Lady Raider offensive attack.
Against Western Michigan, Miami pulled out to a 4-1 lead after four innings, but the Broncos scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome the RedHawk advantage.
Nicki Pelfrey launched a two-run homerun in the fourth inning for the 'Hawks, and Laura Fulton went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run.
Miami, which moved to 4-3 on the season, will take on Tennessee State at 10 a.m. (CST) and Belmont at 6 p.m. (CST).
