WILMINGTON, N.C.--Miami ended its first day of competition at the Seahawk
Classic on a positive note by defeating host-UNC Wilmington 2-0 in the
final game of the day to start the season 1-2.
Kristina Mortaloni drove in Laura Fulton for the game-winning run in the
sixth inning against the Seahawks with her double that pounded the fence in
right center. Chrissy Martini knocked in Mortaloni to score the insurance
run. Amber Arnold pitched six innings, giving up only three hits and
sitting down seven batters in earning the win on the mound.
Earlier in the day, the RedHawks dropped a 1-0 decision to UNC-Charlotte
in the opening game of the tournament. Abbey Arnold had a no-hitter going
until the seventh inning when she gave up one run off two hits. Martini
stugged the 'Hawks lone hit.
Miami turned around and lost 4-2 to Hampton in the second game of the
tourney. Miami put together 12 hits to Hampton's seven in the loss. The
Fulton twins led the 'Hawks at the plate. Laura went 3-for-4 with an RBI
and a run, while Lesley was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Amber Arnold, who entered
the contest with a 4-0 deficit, gave up only two hits in 5.1 innings of
work while throwing seven strikeouts.
Miami plays UNC Wilmington @ 9 a.m. on Sunday. The winner of the contest
advances to the championship game against the winner of the Hampton/UNC
Charlotte winner.
