Tempe, Ariz. - The RedHawks held their own against the hosts of the Littlewood Classic, second-ranked Arizona State, but couldn't overcome a three-run fourth inning by the Sun Devils, as Miami fell by a 7-3 score.
Senior captain Halle Popson collected another two hits for the RedHawks in the contest, giving her eight hits during the five-game tournament. Popson is currently riding a six-game hit streak, and leads the team in on-base percentage (.543). She also stole two bases against ASU, giving her a team-high four swipes on the season.
Continuing to show some pop with her bat was senior Breanna Robinson, stroking her second home run of the weekend. Robinson has three round-trippers to her name this season, with 10 runs batted in.
Freshman catcher Jenna McGivney gunned down five of seven base stealers during the tournament, including both of Arizona State's potential bag-swipers. McGivney has thrown out 57 percent (8/14) of runners attempting to steal on her this season.
The Sun Devils put pressure on Miami early, pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning.
Miami battled back in the bottom half of the frame, cutting Arizona State's lead in half when outfielder Alicia Hogl brought Popson home from third base with a double to the left field gap. Hogl went 3-for-4 on the day, increasing her team-leading batting average to .424.
ASU scored again in the second inning to make the score 3-1 at that point. The RedHawks came roaring back in the bottom of the third, when Robinson tucked a ball just over the left center field wall, tying the score at 3-3.
The tie didn't last long, as the Sun Devils scored three times in the top of the fourth inning, giving ASU a comfortable three run lead. Arizona State wouldn't look back from that point on, scoring once more before the end of the game, to secure a 7-3 victory over the RedHawks.
