Opening its 2001 campaign at the UNC Triangle Classic, Miami University's softball team posted a 1-1 record in its first day of competition. The RedHawks fell in their opening game to Purdue, 2-0, and then rebounded to capture a 3-2 win over UNC Greensboro.

Abbey Arnold threw all seven innings of the first game, giving up just one earned run in the 2-0 loss to Purdue. Miami mustered just five hits in the game.

Nicki Pelfrey had a hand all three runs in the 2-3 win over UNC Greensboro. The RedHawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Pelfrey knocked in Keri Brisnehan to score the first run of the game, and Amber Arnold doubled to drive in Pelfrey to give the 'Hawks the 2-0 advantage.

UNC Greensboro answered with two runs in the fourth inning to knot the game, 2-2. In the fifth inning, Jacki Molinaro doubled to score Pelfrey for the game-winning run.

Amber Arnold picked up the win against UNC Greensboro, throwing all seven innings. She notched nine strikeouts and gave up no earned runs.
