OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team splits its final doubleheader of the fall against Indianapolis Sunday. The RedHawks defeated the Greyhounds, 4-0 in game one, before falling, 2-0 in the nightcap. Miami finishes the fall exhibition season 6-1-1.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Simpson completed an impressive fall as she threw another shutout in the first game. She gave up only five hits and struck out eight. Simpson finished the fall with a perfect 0.00 ERA in 28 1/3 innings pitched. She recorded 31 strikeouts, and held opponents to a .214 batting average against.

Miami got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Alexis Javier singled to score Lindsey Randall. The next batter, Ashley Gartland also singled, and that scored Kelly Cabana and Javier.

The RedHawks added one more run in the bottom of the fourth. After Jenna McGivney singled and Cabana reached on a fielding error, Javier sacrificed them over to second and third base. Gartland then recorded an infield single to load the bases. The next batter, Jordan McElroy, grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Randall, who had pinch run for McGivny, to complete the scoring for the RedHawks.


 

 

Gartland was 2-for-3 with two RBI. McGivny also had a 2-for-3 day at the plate.

Freshman Katie Osburn made her pitching debut in the second game. She gave up two runs in two innings pitched. Meredith Linch came in and shut out the Greyhounds for the last five innings, but Miami was unable to push a run across the board off of its four hits.
