Final Stats

OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawk softball team defeated Indianapolis Sunday in a fall exhibition doubleheader, taking game one, 10-2, and the nightcap, 6-5. Miami is 3-0 this fall after defeating the club team 13-0 last weekend.

In game one, Miami opened up scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The big shot was a two-run home run to left center from Sarah Billstrom that also scored Alicia Hogl. The RedHawks added three more in the bottom of the third off a double from Shannon Tillett that scored Jenna McGivney, a sacrifice fly from Billstrom that scored Hogl and a successful suicide squeeze bunt from Katie Osburn that scored Lindsay Randall. The RedHawks completed their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one in the bottom of the sixth.

Jessica Simpson pitched well in five inning to earn the victory for Miami. She gave up only two hits and two unearned runs, while striking out six. Tillett was strong at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Hogl was 2-for-3 with one RBI, a walk and three runs scored.

The RedHawks struck first in game two when Daniela Torres scored off a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning. Indianapolis answered with two in the top of the second off Miami starter Shalise Lugo, but Miami answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame. Ashley Zappia drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the first run, while Taylor Rice followed with an infield single to give the RedHawks the lead at 3-2.

After Tillett added her fourth RBI of the day with a double in the bottom of the fourth, the Greyhounds regained the lead with three runs off two Miami errors in the top of the fifth. Simpson came into the game with one out in the frame and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam by inducing an inning ending double-play ground ball.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, with Hogl and Simpson on base, Jordan McElroy hit a double to centerfield that scored both runners. Simpson then sent the Greyhounds down in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win for Miami.

Tillett was 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead the RedHawks. She finished the doubleheader 6-for-8 with four RBI and four doubles.

Miami concludes fall exhibition play when they take on Northwestern and Loyola in Evanston, Ill. on Oct. 11.
