OXFORD, Ohio - It was a perfect weekend for the Miami softball team, as they swept Dayton in a doubleheader Sunday. The RedHawks won game one, 5-0, on a complete game shutout from freshman pitcher Jessica Simpson. They then took the nightcap by a 6-5 score. Miami is now 5-0-1 during the fall exhibition season.

Simpson threw strongly again during the first game. She went all seven innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. She struck out 10. Simpson has yet to allow a run in 21 and 1/3 innings pitched during the fall.

Miami got on the board in the first inning after Ashley Gartland led off the game with a triple. She scored on a fielding error by the Flyers second baseman. Later in the inning, Lauren Odom doubled to score Megan Mawn.

After scoring one run in the second, the RedHawks completed their scoring for the game with two in the bottom of the fifth. The blow once again came off Odom's bat as she doubled home both Daniela Torres and Jordan McElroy.

Odom was the leading hitter for Miami in game one, going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Kathryn Russette was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Dayton took the early lead in the second game with one run in the top of the first. The RedHawks answered in the bottom of the second when McElroy singled home Alexis Javier.

After the Flyers took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth, Miami responded with a four-run inning to take a 5-3 lead of its own. With the bases loaded and one out, Kelly Cabana doubled to center field, scoring two runs. The next batter, Lindsay Randall, grounded out, which scored McElroy. Javier then completed the scoring for the inning by doubling home Cabana.

Dayton retied the score at five in the top of the sixth inning. Mawn gave Miami the lead back in the bottom of the inning when she singled to score Javier.

In the top of the seventh, the Flyers led off with a double off pitcher Meredith Linch. The RedHawks then brought Simpson in, and she immediately caught the runner trying to advance to third on a groundball. Simpson then got the next two batters to strikeout and pop up to record the save and give Miami a 6-5 win.

Linch earned the victory for the RedHawks, pitching two innings of relief. Cabana had a strong performance, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Jenna McGivney was 2-for-2 with one run scored.

Miami will close out the fall exhibition season when they host Indianapolis for a doubleheader on Sunday, October 5. The first game is scheduled for Noon.
