Torres' Blast Keeps Miami Alive in MAC Softball Championship
May 13, 2011
AKRON, Ohio – Miami kept its season alive once again Friday afternoon with a gritty 4-1 victory over Ball State. The RedHawks improve to 32-21 on the season, while the Cardinals are eliminated from the event and finish the year at 34-24.
Miami will not get much of an opportunity to celebrate, as the RedHawks will be right back in action later Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Central Michigan in another elimination game. Miami will need to continue to win its games to extend its season.
Jessica Simpson pitched well in earning her 27th victory of the season. She allowed only one unearned run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly. She allowed no other Cardinal batter to reach third base the remainder of the game. Simpson allowed only four hits and struck out seven.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of fourth inning, Taylor Rice walked with one out. Jenna McGivney followed with a single through the left side. After a strike out, Daniela Torres blasted a shot that just cleared the left field wall, a three-run home run that put Miami in front, 3-1.
The RedHawks would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh. With Meghan Mawn on first and one out, a double over the centerfielder’s head by Kathryn Russette would bring Mawn home and make it 4-1. That would be all Simpson would need as she retired Ball State in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
Torres finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Mawn was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Russette went 1-for-1 with three walks.
