Akron, Ohio - Despite a solid outing by the entire Miami softball team, the RedHawks were unable to move past Akron in the second day of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, falling to the Zips, 3-2.
Sophomore Sarah Billstrom was 2-for-4 at the plate, giving her 48 base hits on the year. Billstrom finished the season with a .340 batting average, tying her with Meghan Mawn for the second highest average on the team.
Driving in the two Miami runs were freshman Jenna McGivney and senior Kimberly Williams. The two players accounted for two of the six RedHawk hits on the day.
Starting pitcher Meredith Linch went three and two-thirds innings, giving up only two runs. Though she took the loss, Linch kept the Akron bats quiet, allowing just three hits while she was in the circle.
Shalise Lugo relieved Linch in the fourth inning, and closed out the final two and a third innings. Lugo was also impressive for the RedHawks, giving up one run on three hits. In MAC games, the two pitcher allowed just 2.03 earned runs per game, the third lowest by any staff in the conference.
Kimberly Williams opened the scoring for Miami in the top of the second inning, when she sent a line drive into left field, scoring Alicia Hogl from second base. Six of her 11 runs batted in this season have come in her last eight games.
Akron took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, as Julie Boyes sent a ball over the left field fence with a runner on base for her eighth home run of the season.
Katrina Moffett padded the Zips' lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out single up the middle, plating Lisa McLean from third base.

In the top of the seventh, Miami attempted a comeback, as the first two hitters reached base, Sarah Billstrom on a double to left centerfield and Breanna Robinson on an intentional walk. Unfortunately, the RedHawks were unable to bring home either base runner, making the game's final score 3-2.
