Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Miami softball team dropped game one of its series with Western Michigan, falling in a pitcher's duel, 2-1.
Sophomore pitcher Meredith Linch was outstanding for the Red and White despite the loss, allowing two unearned runs while scattering seven hits in the contest. Linch went the distance for the 17th time this season, striking out three and walking no batters. She now owns a 14-14 record with a 3.43 earned run average on the year.
With a run scoring single in the third inning, freshman Meghan Mawn extended her hit streak to seven games. Mawn is batting .417 (10-for-24) over that span, crossing the plate five times for the RedHawks.
Miami earned the first run of the game in the top of the third inning, when second baseman Meghan Mawn drove a ball to centerfield, plating Kathryn Russette from third base. Mawn now has 16 runs batted in on the season.
The Broncos answered back with two runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The game turned into a defensive battle from there on out, as the two teams combined for three hits through the remaining four innings.
Miami was unable to muster another run through the rest of the game, as Western Michigan earned the narrow 2-1 victory.
The RedHawks finish the 2008 regular season Sunday afternoon, as the same two teams will close out their series with a game start slated for 1 p.m.
