Box Score

OXFORD - The Miami softball team was unable to capitalize on a complete game gem from sophomore pitcher Meredith Linch, as the RedHawks fell to Eastern Michigan in the first game of their two-game series with the Eagles, 2-1.

Linch was outstanding in the circle for Miami, giving up just two runs, while scattering eight hits over seven innings. Linch has allowed two runs or less in three of her last five outings.

Senior outfielder Christine Bills drove in the only run for the Red and White on Saturday, collecting her 21st RBI of the season. Bills ranks second on the team in runs batted in, 16 behind team leader, Breanna Robinson.

Eastern Michigan pushed the first run of the game across the plate in the top of the second inning, when outfielder Stephanie Sabo singled in shortstop Stacie Skodinski from second base, giving EMU a 1-0 lead. The score marked the third straight game that Miami's opponent scored the first run of the contest.

The Eagles scored what ended up being a much needed insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, as pinch runner Jessica Patterson came home on a Lauren Delapaz single.

The RedHawks pulled the game to within one run, when with two out in the bottom of the seventh, senior Christine Bills drilled a ball through the middle of the infield, scoring Sarah Billstrom from second base. EMU pitcher Jaclyn Caro was able to regain her composure and lock down the final out of the game, giving the Eagles a 2-1 victory.

Miami closes out its home schedule on Sunday, as these same two teams will do battle once again, with a first pitch set for 1 p.m. Sunday is senior day at the Miami Softball Stadium, where the graduating class of 2008, including Christine Bills, Halle Popson, Breanna Robinson, Natalie Savona and Kimberly Williams, will be honored before the game for their contributions to the Miami softball program.
