KALAMAZOO, Mich - Western Michigan's Jaymie Voss threw a perfect game in the night cap and the RedHawks managed five hits in game one as Miami University's softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Western Michigan, 3-0 and 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in Kalamazoo. The game one loss ended the RedHawks' (13-18, 6-3 MAC) six-game MAC winning streak.

"The good thing today is everything that went wrong for us is in our individual control," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "If we truly want to be at the top in the end, individual players will make the adjustments."

Sophomore starter Courtney Salmon (Auburn, Wa./Auburn) was met with bad luck, as she allowed just four hits in the second game, while striking out seven batters compared to one walk. Voss (3-6) provided all of the game's offense with a first-inning home run to right field. The senior hurler struck out nine RedHawks in the effort.

"Courtney and Jackie did a great job today," said Jacobs. "All year our pitchers have pitched well enough to keep us in ball games. Our offense just has to show up."

In game one, the Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Amy Fleming led off the inning with a double to the corner in right, before moving to third on an a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Kristi Strange hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring the run for Western Michigan.

Miami threatened in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and third with one out. Senior Jamie Carey (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) led off the inning with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Bianca Paz (Mesilla, N.M./Las Cruces) singled, moving Carey to third, and stole second. WMU starter Laura Stewart induced a line out and strike out to get out of the inning.

Carey led the RedHawks offense, finishing 2-for-4 in the game.

Junior starter Jackie Poggendorf (6-5) struck out six and walked none in 5.2 innings of work for Miami. She became the third pitcher in school history with 400 strikeouts when she fanned Tricia Vanderslik to end the fourth, and tied Miami Hall of Famer Kristy Burch for second all-time with her 401st strikout in the sixth.

WMU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning, pushing its lead to 3-0. Strange hit a two-out double and was followed by Stefanie Scheumann who reached on a wild pitch after striking out. Pinch hitter Melissa Brink plated both runners with a double of her own.

Miami returns home to host Eastern Michigan in a three-game conference series at Miami Softball Field. The RedHawks and Eagles play a doubleheader on Friday with a single game Saturday. First pitch for both days is set for 1 p.m.
