Final Stats

SEATTLE – It took 10 innings, some great pitching and a few defensive plays, but the Miami RedHawks defeated the Seattle Redhawks 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Miami improves to 6-7 overall, while Seattle falls to 1-14 on the year.

The Red and White finally broke through on Seattle starter Hannah Klein in the top of the 10th inning. Shannon Tillett led off the frame with a single to right center. Daniela Torres was next with a single up the middle to move Tillett to second base. Jenna McGivney followed with her own single up the middle that brought Tillett home.

There was some drama to close the game in the top of the tenth inning. Seattle loaded the bases on Jessica Simpson, who had come in relief of starter Meredith Linch in the bottom of the seventh, with two outs. Simpson then forced Sandra Hernandez into a groundout to second base to secure the victory for Miami.

Linch pitched 6.2 innings for the RedHawks, giving up five hits and striking out four. The only significant trouble she had was when she gave up two hits in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Simpson came in and forced the next Seattle into a groundout to end the threat. Simpson pitched 3.1 innings for her fourth victory of the season. She gave up three hits and struck out three.

McGivney was the top hitter for the RedHawks, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Miami returns to action tomorrow when it opens play at the Husky Classic. The RedHawks take on defending national champion and top-ranked Washington at 9 p.m. (EST).
