Final Stats
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Miami softball team dropped a couple of games Sunday to conclude play at the Miken Classic. In the morning, the RedHawks fell to 18th-ranked Florida State, 4-0. Later that afternoon Miami lost to Michigan State, 8-0, in six innings. The RedHawks fall to 5-7 on the season.
In the opener against the 18th-ranked Seminoles, senior pitcher Meredith Linch gave up a run in the opening inning, but kept Florida State off the board for the next two frames. Another run in the fourth and two runs in the second broke it open for the Seminoles.
Miami’s best threats to score came in the first inning when Meghan Mawn and Kathryn Russette each got singles but the RedHawks were unable to bring them home. In the fifth inning, Alicia Hogl led off with a double down the right field line but was stranded there. Linch ended up pitching 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on nine hits. Daniela Torres had the best day at the plate for Miami, going 2-for-3.
The game against Michigan State was a pitcher’s dual between Jessica Simpson and Kelly Confer through the first 3 and a half innings as neither pitcher would give the opposition anything to hit. In the bottom of the fourth the Spartans ended the dual when they loaded the bases and scored three off a triple, followed by another run on a groundout. They ended the game early when they scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth off relievers Katie Osburn and Shalise Lugo.
Sarah Billstrom was Miami’s top hitter against Michigan State, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base.
The RedHawks will continue to their spring break trip on the other side of the country as they fly to Seattle, Wash. to participate in the Husky Classic, Mar. 11-13. Miami will take on defending national champion and top ranked Washington at Mar. 11 at 9 p.m. (EST) in the first night game in the University of Washington’s history. Before that tournament begins they will play a single game at Seattle University on Mar. 10 at 6:30 p.m. (EST).
