Box Score

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Sophomore Breanna Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) clubbed a two-run, fifth inning home run and freshman Kelly Cabana (Irvine, Calif.) pitched four innings of scoreless relief as the Miami University softball team (5-3) rallied to beat Utah Valley State, 6-4, Sunday morning. After spotting the Wolverines a 4-0 lead, Miami scored three runs in the second and two in the fifth as it won its third game at the Troy Cox Invitational.

Utah Valley State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a one-out single and a two-out triple, and in the second inning, a two-out, three-run triple extended the Wolverines lead to 4-0. A single, a fielder's choice and a hit batter preceded the Wolverines second-inning triple, and the run-scoring three-bagger knocked starter Christine Bills (Canal Fulton, Ohio) from the game.

Three two-out runs from Miami in the bottom of the second inning made it 4-3 as an error and three singles accounted for its three runs. A one-out error on a Robinson groundball and a single through the left side by sophomore Jamie Arundel (Tonka Bay, Minn.) put runners at first and second, and following a flyout, consecutive RBI singles from junior Ashley Nieman (Richmond, Mich.) and freshman Ashley Gartland (Tempe, Ariz.) moved the RedHawks to within one run.

The RedHawks put a runner in scoring position with less than two outs in both the third and fourth innings and failed to score, but Cabana kept the RedHawks within striking distance, holding the Wolverines scoreless in her first three innings out of the bullpen.

Robinson put Miami ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth with her two-run, opposite field home run. After working to a full count, Robinson clubbed Jackie Roberts' 3-2 pitch just over the rightfield wall, extending her hitting streak to six games and knocking Roberts out of the game. Robinson's long ball also plated junior Leslie Macedo (Livermore, Calif.), who doubled to lead off the inning.

Miami added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Macedo's two-out RBI single made it 6-4. Gartland reached on an error to open the inning, and after a sacrifice bunt and a flyout advanced her to third base, Macedo lined a single just inside the third base bag to give the RedHawks a two-run cushion.

Senior Courtney Salmon (Auburn, Wash.) retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, notching her second save of the season. Cabana (2-0) earned her second win of the season, striking out six in 4.1 innings in the circle.

Robinson and Gartland both extended their hitting streaks to six games, finishing 1-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively. Macedo also went 2-for-4, notching her fourth multi-hit game of the season. Both Gartland and Robinson finished with multi-RBI games, each tallying two RBIs in the contest.

Miami plays its final game in the Troy Cox Invitational at 2 p.m. today against the host New Mexico State Aggies.
