Dec. 4, 2002

After a season that included a Mid-American Conference record for overall wins and conference wins, its first MAC regular season title, a third consecutive MAC Tournament title and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Miami University's women's soccer team placed five members on the National Soccer Coaches of America Association's (NSCAA) Great Lakes Region team.

Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield), the 2002 MAC Player of the Year, and Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) notched first-team honors, while senior Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) was named to the second team. Seniors Shaedyn Cousino (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) and Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) rounded out the group with third team accolades. Miami's five overall selections were the most selections from any one team.

Berkemeier led the Red and White with 19 goals and 44 points this season. She ended her Miami career on top of the MAC all-time point list with 148 points, first on the MAC all-time goal list with 60, and ranked third with 28 career assists. Berkemeier was a four-time all-region team honoree during her career at Miami.

Swinehart ended the MAC regular season tied for third in the league with seven assists. The starting midfielder started in all 24 games for Miami and tallied seven goals for Miami, including the game-winner over Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Swinehart earned first-team all-MAC, academic all-MAC, and second-team Verizon Academic all-District accolades following her stellar season.

Cunnningham finished second on the RedHawks with 13 goals and eight assists, respectively. The senior captain, who also has been named to the all-region team for three consecutive seasons, ended her career second on the MAC all-time list in goals, second in all-time points and tied for seventh in MAC history in assists. The 2001 MAC Player of the Year already has earned 2002 first-team all-MAC honors.

Altiero earns her second consecutive all-region honor, while Cousino finishes her Miami career with three all-region selections. Altiero, a two-time first-team all-MAC selection, scored six goals and seven assists this year. Cousino, joined Cunningham and Berkemeier, as a four-time all-MAC honoree with her second-team all-MAC selection this season after scoring two goals and four assists.

As a team, Miami finished the 2002 season at 19-3-2 after getting knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by the University of Michigan, 4-0. Michigan eventually lost to defending national champion Santa Clara in the elite eight.
