ATHENS, Ohio-After leading the Mid-American Conference in scoring for the second consecutive season and becoming the MAC's career scoring leader, Miami University junior Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) earned the ultimate honor from her peers Thursday night at the MAC Women's Soccer Awards Banquet where she was named MAC Player of the Year.

Cunningham, who has led Miami to a 12-6-1 overall record and MAC Semifinal berth, led the conference in scoring for the second straight season, tallying 15 goals and three assists for a total of 33 points. In MAC play, Cunningham netted a league-best 10 goals, including five game-winners, and finished with 22 points. A 2000 NSCAA First-Team All-American, Cunningham became the MAC's career scoring leader last Tuesday when she tallied her 106th career point with a goal in Miami's MAC Quarterfinal defeat of Buffalo. Cunningham is the first Miami player to earn the award.

"This is really a great honor for Andrea and our entire program," Head Coach Bobby Kramig said. "In my mind, Andrea has clearly been the class of this conference for the past two seasons. For her to come back from all of her honors last season and work even harder this season says a lot about her character. There's no question she's very deserving of the honor."

Along with being named MAC Player of the Year, Cunningham was honored as a first-team all-MAC selection, marking the third consecutive season that she has received all-MAC recognition. The 2000 Ohio Player of the Year, Cunningham was a first-team all-MAC selection last season and a second-team honoree in 1999.

Joining Cunningham on the first-team were junior Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield), who finished fourth in the MAC in scoring with nine goals and eight assists for 28 points, and redshirt sophomore Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), who leads Miami and ranks among the MAC leaders with nine assists. Berkemeier, who has 94 career points is on pace to become the fourth player in MAC history to clear 100 career points. Altiero enjoyed a break-out season in which she tallied two three-assist matches, including one in last Tuesday's quarterfinal, and is on the verge of breaking Miami's single-season assist record.

Also honored for the RedHawks were second-team selections junior Shaedyn Cousino (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), who joined Cunningham and Berkemeier as a three-time all-MAC honoree, and junior transfer Katie Karlander (Carmel, Ind./Syracuse), who became the first Miami goalkeeper to earn all-league recognition. Cousino has tallied two goals and three assists this season while serving as a dominant presence in the Miami midfield. Karlander has an 11-4-0 record and 0.95 goals against average in her first season as the RedHawk netminder.

Miami, which is in the midst of defending its 2000 MAC Tournament Championship, takes to field at 11 a.m. Friday to battle Eastern Michigan University in the MAC Semifinals.
