As the Miami women's soccer team continues into the postseason, the individual honors start pouring in for the RedHawks. Senior Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division women's soccer first-team and sophomore Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, OH/Worthington) earned second-team honors.
Altiero has started all 20 matches in the midfield for the RedHawks where she has tallied five goals, six assist and 16 points on the season. Three of Altiero's five goals have been match-winners and one earned a tie against St. John's University. Altiero has notched six assists this season, which puts her for second on the team. Her defense has contributed to Miami's nine shutouts over the last 16 contests and only allowing 10 goals in that period. The captain was named Mid-American Conference co-Player of the Week on Sept. 30th. Altiero is the highest scoring midfielder in Miami history. During her second year at Miami, she was named first-team all-MAC and honored as a third-team all-Great Lakes Region selection by both the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz. This is the second season Verizon has honored Altiero, she earned Verizon Academic All-District IV second-team last season. Altiero also was a first-team all-Ohio honoree and named to the academic all-MAC and all-Ohio teams last season.
Swinehart ended the MAC regular season tied for third in the league with seven assists. The starting midfielder has started in all 20 games and has tallied five goals including one game-winner at Toledo. Two of Swinehart seven assists have come off flip throw-ins that have carried from the sideline to the mouth of the goal.
This year's team was voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from District IV, which encompasses Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To qualify, a student-athlete must own a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
