OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami women's soccer will welcome DePaul University and the University of Louisville to Miami Soccer Field this weekend. The RedHawks will take on the Blue Demons of DePaul on Friday at 5 p.m. and the Cardinals of Louisville on Sunday at 1 p.m.

THE DEPAUL BLUE DEMONS

DePaul and Miami have never faced each other but that will change Friday with the Blue Demons traveling to Miami Soccer Field Sept. 12. Depaul grabbed their first victory of the 2008 campaign Sept. 7 against Western Illinois 3-1. The Blue Demons lost their first five games by a combined score of 12-3. Defending Mid-American conference tournament champion, Toledo beat DePaul 2-0 on Aug. 31. For the season DePaul is 1-5-0 and the leading scorer for the Blue Demons is Tara Strickland, a sophomore midfielder, with two goals and two assists this season. DePaul features a very balanced attack as nine players have recorded a point this season. Morgan Celaya has leads the team in shots with 11 but has yet to net a goal. Dominique Locascio and Molly Borchart both have perfect shot percentages as they have scored goals on their only shot attempts.

THE LOUISVILLE CARDNALS

Louisville comes to Oxford with a record of 1-1-1 prior to their game against Oklahoma State Friday, Sept. 12. Louisville opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Butler in Indianapolis, followed by a 1-0 loss to Texas and a 1-1 tie with Purdue . Miami currently leads the all-time series with Louisville 4-2, the RedHawks won the first four match-ups with the Cardinals taking the last two. Chloe Kiefer has played all of the minutes in net for Louisville heading into their match-up with Oklahoma State. Keifer has only allowed three goals in her first three games while recording 10 saves while between the posts in 2008. Louisville has been tough in the second half as they have not allowed a second half goal all season and have outshot their opponents 23-19 in the second frame. One of the spark plugs for Louisville has been Shannon Smyth, who has two points (tied for the team lead) coming off the bench.

STAND STRONG AT HOME

Miami opens the season on a five game home stand and they are currently 1-2-0 during the five game stand at home. The five game games at home are the most in a row for the RedHawks since they had a five game run at the end of the 2000 season. Miami went 3-2 during that run and rode that momentum all the way to the NCAA tournament.

INTERNATIONAL REDHAWKS

The Red and White have nine international players. Sara Lund, Eva Candia, Sarah Dessfelt, Nathalie Hillgren and Alexandra Karlsson are all from Sweden. Five are from Malmo, a port city on the southern tip of the country. Dessfelt is from Vellinge. Miami also has four players from Canada, Courtney Clarke, Haley Clark, Krysti Clarke and career saves leader Krista Pace.

SWEET SWEDE

Sara Lund (Sr., Malmo, Sweden) earned Mid-American Conference player of the week award honors following her performance in the RedHawks season opener Aug. 22.

Lund started the season off with a bang against Morehead State with the first hat trick of her career. After the RedHawks went down 1-0 to Morehead State Lund put up three unanswered goals to give the Red and White a 3-1 victory.

Lund scored all three goals in a hard earned fashion. Lund scored her first goal by beating a defender and then firing a shot hit goalie Sam Yocke and got into the net. The second goal by Lund had to be the most unlikely as she hit the near post and the ball ran along the goal line striking the far post and then entering the goal before Yocke could fall on it. The third goal of the day by the 5 foot, 7 inch sophomore was a brilliant sliding shot.

LAST TIME OUT

Kendall Loggins found the back of the net on a sliding shot in the 105th minute to make the RedHawks the hard luck losers in hotly contested game. The goal came right after a great diving save by Krista Pace (Jr. Toronto, Ontario) at 103:48 of the overtime. Cincinnati controlled possession for most of the of the overtime period. Miami was spurred to a couple runs with the help of a vocal crowd that toughed out the rain.

After a goal by Julie Morrissey on a pass from Kendall Loggins in the 77th minute it look like Miami might not even see overtime. Stephanie Laser (Jr. Hinsdale Ill.) came to the rescue in the 87th minute with a line drive shot off a pass from Jodi Zwingelberg (Jr. Elgin, Ill). The assist was the second on the day for Zwingelberg.

Miami opened scoring in the first half, when Sara Lund (Jr. Malo, Sweden) beat Cincinnati keeper Andrea Kaminski on a low line drive in the 7th minute. Cincinnati answered back in the 23rd minute with a hard shot from Erin MacDonald that hit Pace and found the back of the net.

Cincinnati controlled the pace of the game following the goal by Lund but once MacDonald evened the score Miami had several solid chances and earned three comer kicks. Zwingelberg had a strong shot that was pushed over the net by Kaminski late in the first half.

MIAMI PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN THE MAC

Miami was picked to finish fourth in the MAC regular season in a poll conducted by the MAC coaches. Toledo was picked to finish fourth and received the most votes for tournament champion (7), however the RedHawks finished second with three votes.

RECAPING 2007

Miami 6-10-3 in 2007 to finish eighth in the conference and qualify for the Mid-American Conference (MAC) tournament but Miami lost in the first round to top seed Ball State. The RedHawks built on a core of young talent and return Sara Lund (So., Malmo, Sweden), Miami's top goal scorer and MAC Freshman of the year. Miami also returns Julie Thompson (So., Glenview, Ill.) who, along with Lund, was named to the conference All-Freshmen team. Krista Pace (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) set the Miami single season record for saves in 2007 as she recorded 120 stops for the season. Pace used her 120 save season to move a top the career saves list at Miami as she begins the 2008 campaign with 200 career saves. Pace is also only four shutouts away from becoming the school record holder.

NEXT UP

Miami will hit the road for their first road game Sept. 19 as the RedHawks will travel to Sacramento State the game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
