Final Stats

The Miami women's soccer team proved that they belong on the national scene against 13th ranked Purdue University on Thursday at Miami Soccer Field when the game was ended after one overtime with the score knotted at one goal apiece.

The Mid-American Conference regular season champions hope of beating the first ranked opponent to play in Oxford looked bleak when the Boilermakers scored on the first shot of the match.

Junior forward Jennie Moppert cut through the RedHawk defense before passing the ball in front of the net for sophomore forward Lauren Sesselmann who one-touched the ball into the net past Miami goalkeeper Leigh Terry (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven).

The RedHawks went into the half with a one-goal deficit and ready to prove they could hang with one of the top Big Ten teams. The Red and White were outshot 7-1 in the first half and RedHawk goalkeeper stopped three shots to zero saves for Purdue's Jocelyn Cavalier.

The score remained 1-0 until the 60th minute when redshirt junior Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) served a ball for freshman defender Lindsay Dunmead (Northville, MI/Northville) off a corner kick. Dunmead was able to head the ball in the goal past Cavalier for her first goal as a RedHawk.

In the second half, the RedHawks played step-for-step with the Boilermakers. Both teams equaled seven shots including some golden opportunities to score the game-winner.

As the visibility decreased and light rain began to fall on the Halloween night, both teams pressed on in the non-conference battle. Andrea Cunningham missed the only shot taken by the RedHawks in overtime while Annette Kent missed both Boilermaker overtime shots.

Purdue outshot Miami 9-8 after the first half and 16-9 over the entire game. Terry finished the game with seven saves and Cavalier stopped two Miami shots.

With the tie, the RedHawks end the regular season with a program best record of 15-2-2. Purdue takes a 12-3-2 record to Champaign, Illinois for their final regular season game of 2002 against the University of Illinois.

Miami enters the 2002 MAC tournament as the top seed posting an all-time MAC best record of 11-1-0. The RedHawks will face the eighth seed, the Central Michigan Chippewas at 2 p.m. in Oxford on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Central Michigan gave the RedHawks their only MAC loss and only home loss on the season, 3-2, back on October 4th.
