The first and second-place teams in the Mid-American Conference battled for 73 minutes of Sunday afternoons contest in Muncie, Ind. without a goal scored until Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) and Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, OH/Worthington) converted back-to-back goals in less than two minutes to give Miami a 2-0 victory over Ball State University.
Cunningham rocketed a goal past Ball State goalkeeper K.D. Moreland off an assist from Megan Shapiro (Grosse Point, MI/South) to take the 1-0 lead while the clock read 73:22. Seconds later, the RedHawks attacked again as Swinehart scored off an assist from senior Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) at 74:57.
Miami dominated from the start, playing much of the match on the Cardinals side of the field. In the first half alone, the RedHawks posted a 14-4 advantage in shots and ended the game with a 21-7 edge.
"Ball State is a real organized and disciplined team," said head coach Bobby Kramig. "Our kids had a great professional attitude and didn't get frustrated by Ball State."
Freshman goalkeeper Leigh Terry (Grand Haven, MI/ Grand Haven) collected her second consecutive shutout by saving four shots on goal. Terry has not allowed a goal in over 268 minutes and has amassed five of the eight Miami shutouts this season.
Miami opens up a two-game conference lead with three MAC games remaining on the 2002 schedule. The RedHawks own an 11-2-1 overall mark and a 8-1 league slate. With the loss, Ball State drops to 10-4 overall and 6-3 in the MAC.
"I am real pleased with the way we played this weekend," said Kramig. "Ball State and Butler are real good teams and it was good to win both away games."
