OXFORD, Ohio - Paced by two goals apiece from junior forward Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) and freshman midfielder Megan Shapiro (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), Miami University's women's soccer team snapped a two-game home losing streak in grand fashion, defeating the University of Akron, 6-0.
Miami, which had been shut out in its previous two home contests, wasted little time in taking it to the Zips. Just 3:45 into the game Cunningham got behind the Akron defense and beat UA goalkeeper Meghan McCarthy to snap a Miami home scoreless streak that had extended for more than 260 minutes. Sophomore midfielder Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) assisted on the goal.
Starting in the 17th minute, the RedHawks went on a torrid run that put the contest out of reach, netting three goals in under eight minutes. Shapiro opened the fireworks, by taking a cross kick from freshman midfielder Laura Freel (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and depositing it in the net. Freel also sparked Miami's third goal at 19:52, sending a pass to Julie Grosso (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto), who sent a pass to the front of the net, where Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) was in place to finish the goal. Cunningham wrapped up Miami's first-half scoring, once again beating the Akron defense for a one-on-one score, her team and league-best ninth goal of the season.
The Red and White tacked on two more goals in the second half. Shapiro notched the second goal of the match and her collegiate career at 70:52 when her well-placed corner kick was fumbled into the goal by the Zip goalkeeper. Katie Milligan (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) rounded out Miami's scoring at 79:28 with a penalty kick.
