OXFORD, Ohio - Hampered by two University of Utah penalty kicks and a lack of scoring opportunities, Miami University's women's soccer team dropped its home opener Sunday afternoon at Miami Soccer Field, falling 3-0 to the Utes.
Miami, which entered the day on a four-match winning streak, fell behind in the 21st minute, when Utah's Katie Tate beat RedHawk goalkeeper Katie Karlander (Carmel, Ind./Syracuse) on the first of two penalty kick opportunities. Despite an even battle for the remainder of the first half, Miami was able to squeeze off only one shot on goal and trailed 1-0 at the half.
The Red and White continued to hang tough in the second half until Utah's Amy Kofoed scored from close range off Megan Maxwell's well-placed cross kick in the 74th minute. Miami turned up the pressure from there, squeezing off three shots on goal over the next 15 minutes, including a number of other close opportunities, but Utah's second penalty kick of the match, which was converted by Missy Dennis, squelched the RedHawk momentum.
On the afternoon, Utah held a 17-7 advantage in shots. Karlander absorbed her first loss since Sept. 1 while making four saves and allowing one non-penalty kick goal. Along with the conclusion of Miami's four-game winning streak, the RedHawks were shut out for the first time in 15 games and shut out at home for the first time in 24 games.
Miami, which concluded its non-conference schedule with the loss, returns to action this Friday and Sunday when it makes the lengthy trip to Kent State and Buffalo, respectively. The RedHawks currently stand at 4-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Utah, which plays in the Mountain West Conference, upped its overall mark to 3-2-0.
