MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Miami University's women's soccer team overcame a tough Central Michigan University team and some unusual circumstances to earn a 2-1 Mid-American Conference victory.
The RedHawks, who now have won four consecutive matches, tallied an Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) goal just over a minute into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and capture the win. Swinehart's goal, the first of her collegiate career, came at 46:58 when the freshman collected a deflected Berkemeier shot and deposited it in the goal from 12 yards out. Brooke Paul was credited with the assist.
Miami struck first just over six minutes into the contest, when Berkemeier headed off a dangerous pass deep in the Chippewas' backfield and beat goaltender Kari Alexander, who had eight saves on the afternoon, for a go-ahead score. With the goal, Berkemeier has now tallied a goal or an assist in nine consecutive games, the longest such streak in program history.
Midway through the opening frame, the Chippewas were able to take advantage of Miami's misfortune when Swinehart and Katie Milligan (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), who both later returned, went down with nearly simultaneous injuries. With no one warmed up to enter the contest, Miami was forced to play with just 10 players for the next several minutes. After the RedHawks had twice managed to save balls off the goal line, the Chippewas capitalized with an Olina Vidarsdottir goal at 27:19.
Miami netminder Katie Karlander (Carmel, Ind./Syracuse) earned her fourth consecutive win in goal despite surrendering her first goal in more than 330 minutes. The junior transfer totaled eight saves.
The win, which was the RedHawks' first regular season win versus the Chippewas, advanced Miami to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAC. With a six-game season-opening roadstand now in the books, the Red and White faces the University of Utah at 1 p.m. Sunday in its home opener.
