Final Stats

Senior Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) scored the game-winner just three minutes into the game and added an assist later in the contest while the Miami defense and senior goalkeeper Katie Karlander (Carmel, IN/Syracuse) notched their third straight shutout in a 2-0 victory.

After blanking the Golden Flashes for 90 minutes, the RedHawks have held their opponents scoreless for 326 straight minutes. The last time that Miami has recorded three straight shutouts came during last year when the Red and White held Marshall, Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan scoreless from Oct. 14-21.

Miami played with the lead for most of the game after Laura Freel (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) found Berkemeier making a run towards the goal on a Miami breakaway. Berkemeier one-touched the ball past the charging Kent State goalkeeper while the clock read 3:01 to take a 1-0 advantage.

The RedHawks tacked on another goal when Berkemeier took a hard shot that deflected in front of the goal off Kent State goalkeeper, Lindsey Mitchell. Freshman Emily Hurd (Marietta, GA/Westminster) placed the rebound in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal and gave Miami a 2-0 lead.

Defense was the story for the rest of the match. Karlander, senior Audry Wieman (Fisherville, KY/Sacred Heart), junior Tricia Gill (Hartland, WI/Arrowhead), and freshman Lindsay Dunmead (Northville, MI/Northville) provided an organized defense that never allowed the Kent State offense a chance to get on track.

"Our defense has been terrific lately," said Miami head coach Bobby Kramig. "Karlander and Weiman have been great. Gill has been on her game and Dunmead has really stepped up."

Despite the 2-0 win, Kramig thinks Miami has left room to improve.

"I am delighted with the result," said Kramig. "But I know that we are capable of playing better soccer."

The Red and White outshot the Navy Blue and Gold 14-9. Both Karlander and Mitchell notched six saves in the contest.

The win brings Miami's record to 4-1-1 and 2-0-0 in the MAC while the loss takes Kent State to 2-4-0 and 0-2-0 in the MAC

The RedHawks will travel to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20th before heading onto Akron to take on the Zips at noon on Sept. 22nd.
