LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Miami University's women's soccer team overcame a 37-minute weather delay and a difficult first half Sunday afternoon, defeating the University of Louisville 3-1 and moving to 2-2 on the year.
In the 75th minute, Louisville native Brooke Paul (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) tallied an unassisted game-winning goal to break a 1-1 tie and send Miami on its way to the victory. Junior Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley), assisted by classmate Shaedyn Cousino (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) provided the RedHawks with a security goal at 78:14 to put the game out of reach.
"We really struggled in the first half," head coach Bobby Kramig said. "We were working hard and making good decisions, but things just weren't clicking for us. We talked about just staying patient and hanging in there at halftime, and that's what we did. We were able to wear them down in the second half and did a much better job of finishing our chances.
Following a 37-minute delay because of lightning, Miami had initially taken the lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) netted her third goal of the season off a Cunningham assist. Louisville retaliated less than two minutes later to knot the score prior to halftime.
Katie Karlander (Carmel, Ind./Syracuse) picked up her second win in goal for the RedHawks, blanking Louisville for more than 75 minutes.
Miami, which outshot the Cardinals 16-5 on the day, evened its record to 2-2 while the Cardinals dropped to 1-2. The RedHawks return to action this Friday when they open Mid-American Conference play versus Toledo.
