Sunday's game marked double the excitement for senior Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) by scoring the tournament-winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern along with moving into sole possession of second place for all-time points in the Mid-American Conference.
Miami's only goal came when all-tournament forward Berkemeier fired a shot from 20 yards out into the far-post of the goal beyond the grasp of Georgia Southern goalkeeper Tanya Woehr while the clock read 23:43.
Berkemeier tied Buffalo standout Paula Listrani for all-time points in the MAC with 105 on an assist against St. John's on Friday. Berkemeier passed Listrani in dramatic fashion after her powerful goal versus Georgia Southern. She now has 107 all-time points and only trails teammate Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) on the list, who holds the leads with 109 points.
RedHawk goalkeeper and tournament MVP Katie Karlander (Carmel, IN/Syracuse) posted her first shutout of the 2002 season. Karlander organized the dominating red and white defense to limit the Georgia Southern offense to only two shots on goal.
Miami's was able to control the play for most of the match, as Georgia Southern rotated fresh players in and out to combat the weather that reached above 90 degrees. Cunningham nearly missed two goals, as defenders were able to save the ball from crossing the goal line after the ball passed Woehr. Defender Tricia Gill (Hartland, WI/Arrowhead) earned all-tournament honors and nearly missed a goal also, as her ball went off the crossbar late in the second half.
"I was happy with our win and am pleased with our progress," said head coach Bobby Kramig. "It was great to see Danielle's goal and know that she will forever be remembered as one of the best players to play in the MAC."
Based on tournament scoring, Miami won the inaugural tournament, while Georgia Southern took second. St. John's and Evansville claimed third and fourth, respectively.
In the first game, St. John's played to its second consecutive double-overtime tie when Evansville knotted the score midway through the second half at two. The Red Storm got out to a 2-0 lead when Kaitlin Schmidt scored two break-away goals late in the first half. Ashley Sandefur cut the lead in half by scoring less than a minute after Schmidt's second goal. Kristin Prom scored the tying goal in the 74th minute off a rebound that hit the cross bar for the Aces.
Miami opens up league play on Friday in Toledo at 5 p.m. The RedHawk's return to Oxford on Sunday when Miami hosts Kent State at 1 p.m down at Miami Soccer Field.
