Box Score

Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) scored her second dramatic goal of the young 2002 season with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation while the Miami defense allowed only one goal through 110 minutes to earn a 1-1 tie against St. John's in the first game of the Miami/Adidas Invitational.

Junior Tricia Gill (Hartland, WI/Arrowhead) started the only scoring play for the RedHawks by passing the ball off a direct kick down to the baseline for senior forward Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) who quickly crossed the ball into the center of the action in front of the goal. Altiero finished the play by promptly putting the ball into the back of the net to knot the score at one.

St. John struck first when their only goal came 53 minutes into the contest when senior Joanna Dawson bodied the ball past goaltender Katie Karlander (Carmel, IN/Syracuse) at the near-post off a corner kick by senior Jen Taylor.

Both the RedHawks and Red Storm squandered chances to end the game in overtime due to missed opportunities and strong play from goalkeepers, Karlander and Red Storm senior Tina Fogg. Karlander saved four shots while facing 12, and Fogg saved eight of the RedHawks 21 shots.

"I was pleased with our effort and the quality of the game," said head coach Bobby Kramig. "St. John's had a real organized defense and although I thought we had some good chances to score, I have confidence that our team will continue to progress."

The tie brings Miami's record to 1-1-1. Miami's only other win came off an overtime goal by Altiero over Stony Brook. St. John's record stands at 1-0-1 after day one of the Miami/ Adidas Invitational.

In the second game of the day, Georgia Southern scored the only goal of the contest over Evansville at 44:07 when freshman Jessica Rice blasted a shot from beyond the box off a pass from her older sister Becky Rice. Junior goalie Kari Gast recorded the shutout for the Eagles.

Due to the points awarded on the tournament shootouts following each game, Miami will be playing for the championship against Georgia Southern at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday. St. John's will battle Evansville on Sunday at noon.
