WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Despite a solid season-opening effort, Miami University's women's soccer team could not overcome perennial powerhouse SMU, falling to the Mustangs 2-1 on a game-winning overtime goal.
SMU's Kim Harvey arched a 30-yard shot over the reach of Miami goalkeeper Caitlin Wolf (Fairfield, Ohio/Dayton) at 97:35 to lift the Mustangs to a narrow victory and end a RedHawk upset bid. The goal ended an intense final 30 minutes of play in which Miami had rallied from a 1-0 deficit with a Danielle Berkemeier (Fairfeld, Ohio/Fairfield) goal at 67:55 and continued to pressure the Mustangs until the end.
"Of course it would have been nice to get the win, but I'm pleased with the effort we put forth today," head coach Bobby Kramig said. "We knew following our exhibition last week that we had some things to work on, and a lot of those things came together today. Our goal today was to get better, and I think we accomplished that."
The Mustangs found the back of the net first, when Lori Tipton collected a well-placed cross kick and put the ball past Wolf in an otherwise back-and-forth first half. Miami continued to battle and finally evened the score when Shaedyn Cousino (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) fed a pass to Berkemeier, who fired a sharp-angled shot into the far side of the net.
Wolf, who was making her first collegiate start, absorbed the loss in net. She totaled x saves on the afternoon.
SMU, which was ranked No. 30 nationally in the preseason NSCAA poll, moved to 1-0-0 and advanced to the championship game of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. Miami, which was playing in its third consecutive overtime contest, dropped to 0-1-0 and will play in the consolation game at 12:30 p.m. Sunday versus either Purdue University or Georgetown University.
