DAYTON (Aug. 24, 2001)--Miami University's women's soccer team concluded its preseason Friday night, falling to Atlantic 10 powerhouse the University of Dayton 1-0 in an exhibition on the Flyers' home field.
Miami, which opens the season this Friday with a matchup versus SMU in the first round of the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational, hung tough with the Flyers until a goal in the 87th minute lifted Dayton to the narrow win. According to head coach Bobby Kramig, the contest was a learning experience for a RedHawk team that is still working to integrate a number of newcomers into the lineup.
"It was a typical preseason game," Kramig said. "We came out tight, and it took the first half for us to loosen up. We worked out some things at halftime, though, and played a better second half. Basically, we learned tonight what we're doing well and what we need to still work on. That's why you play preseason exhibitions."
One of the bright spots for the RedHawks was its goalkeeping, where a pair of transfers saw their first action for the Red and White. Junior Katie Karlander (Carmel, Ind./Syracuse) started the contest and blanked the Flyers for the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Dayton transfer Caitlin Wolf (Fairfield, Ohio/Dayton) restricted her former teammates to just one goal.
"I was really pleased with the goalkeeping tonight," Kramig said. "Coming into this season, that was our biggest concern, so it was definitely good to see Karlander and Wolf put forth solid efforts."
Though the RedHawks showed potential, Kramig admits that some of the basics still need some polishing before Friday's season opener.
"Our passing was poor tonight and our tackling was pretty bad," Kramig said. "We saw flashes of what's possible tonight, but we also learned that we still have a lot of work to do."
