It took the RedHawk soccer team 70 minutes to shake off the summer rust before scoring three unanswered goals to beat Stony Brook, 3-2 with an overtime goal by Danielle Altiero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) on a soggy University Field in Stony Brook, N.Y.
After giving up two goals and being shutout by the Seawolves through the first 70 minutes, Andrea Cunningham (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) scored the first goal of the 2002 season on a ball that the Stony Brook goalie Cindy Bennett had saved off the cross bar before Cunningham headed the rebound into the goal. It didn't take long for the RedHawks to knot the score at two when Ashley Swinehart (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington) scored a breakaway goal 28 seconds later off a through ball by Shaedyn Cousino (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill). The score stayed tied until 2:08 into overtime when Altiero booted in a ball that hit the side bar before going in the goal off a cross from Megan Shapiro (Grosse Point, Mich./South).
"I am impressed with the character and courage of this team," said head coach Bobby Kramig. "We were rough around the edges at times and had some first game jitters, but we had every opportunity to fold and instead we showed a lot of heart in our comeback."
The RedHawks outshot the Seawolves 17-15, while Miami goalie Katie Karlander (Carmel, Ind./Syracuse) saved eight shots to Bennett's seven. Freshman Victoria Feliciano scored her first career goal for Stony Brook with 29:32 on the clock and fellow freshman Melanie Archuleta scored in the 57th minute.
