The RedHawk soccer team received a good benchmark as to how far they progressed during their preseason after their scrimmage with Dayton on Friday night in Oxford.

Miami's starters kept the score knotted at zero for the entire first 30-minute period against the Flyers who are ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region according to SoccerBuzz Magazine. The RedHawks are ninth in that same region.

"I was especially impressed with how the first 11 performed," head soccer coach Bobby Kramig said. "When we had the first team out there during the first period; we controlled the play, dominated the game, had most of the procession, and created most of the chances."

During the second and third periods, Kramig gave some of the 12 freshmen their first taste of collegiate action while shuffling the lineup. The RedHawks were outscored 2-0 during the last two periods. After the third period, the RedHawks practiced a shoot-out versus the Flyers before ending the only scrimmage of the preseason for both teams.

"We have a lot of freshmen on the team and I think they learned a lot today," says Kramig. "I think they learned what being a division one college soccer player is all about and the commitment and effort required. If they learn those lessons, than tonight was well worth the effort."

The RedHawks don't have long to learn those lessons before they begin the 2002 season.

"We will train tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday with a day off on Sunday and then we head to New York on Wednesday," says Kramig. "Before we leave, we need to pick a travel team, practice some free kicks and restarts, work on spreading play out, and continue to get organized on the field."

Miami kicks off the season in New York with the University at Stony Brook on Aug. 30 before traveling to Hofstra University on Sept. 1.
