OXFORD, Ohio - After a grueling 2001 campaign came to a close at the Mid-American Conference tournament in the form of a 4-0 loss to Louisville, the Miami University field hockey team has announced its annual team awards.
Senior Beth Young (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley CD) wraps up her career with the RedHawks after been named to the all-MAC second team for the third consecutive year and the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player. This season Young started in all 21 Miami contests while recording two assists. As the only RedHawk to start in every Miami contest during her career, Young departs with 20 goals and 10 assists in 81 consecutive starts. Young has the 11th highest point total in Miami history with 50 points to her credit.
Voted by her teammates as Miami's Most Valuable Defensive Player is senior Karen Preikszas (Medfield, Mass./Medfield). Preikszas had her finest season with the RedHawks after registering seven defensive saves and being selected to the all-MAC first team. With 21 defensive saves to her credit in a 67 game career, Preikszas surely would be the record holder at Miami for DS's if such a record were kept.
Freshman Diane Collias (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) is the recipient of this year's Most Improved Player team award. Collias played in 13 games this season while earning her first collegiate start against Appalachian State in the regular season finale.
After enduring a 2-19 season senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis) received the highest honor from her coach and teammates by being named Miami's Most Valuable Player. Vaughn started in all 21 games this season facing more shots, 243, than all but three goalies in Division I field hockey. Her 185 saves this season ranks her fourth overall in the country and first in the MAC.
The Miami field hockey team ended the 2001 campaign with a 2-19 record and a first-round MAC Tournament loss to Louisville, 4-0.
