KENT, Ohio – Miami University’s field hockey team travels to Kent, Ohio, for the 2008 Mid-American Conference Tournament this weekend. The RedHawks are the second seed and have a bye into the semifinals on Friday where they will face either third seed Ohio or sixth seed Missouri State at 2:30 p.m.
ABOUT MIAMI: The RedHawks finished the regular season 14-6 and went 7-3 in the MAC. Miami has won its last three games and has high-profile wins this season over Indiana (3-2, Oct. 17), Michigan (3-2, Oct. 31) and Ohio (2-1, Oct. 5 and 3-2, Oct. 26). The RedHawks have outscored opponents 64-37 this season and their top point scorer is senior midfielder Elizabeth Gilroy. She has eight goals and 12 assists on the season. With 27 career assists, she is also Miami’s new career leader in that category. With nine goals, sophomore Christine Brightwell is the RedHawks’ leading goal scorer.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: Kent State is the top seed in this year’s MAC Tournament and received the other first-round bye. On Thursday, fourth seed Central Michigan will play fifth seed Ball State at 11 a.m. At 1:30 p.m., third seed Ohio will face off against sixth seed Missouri State. On Friday, Kent State will face the winner of CMU vs. BSU at Noon, which will be followed by Miami vs. the winner of Ohio vs. MSU at 2:30 p.m. The MAC Championship will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner of the tournament will travel to the winner of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 11 for a play-in game into the NCAA Tournament.
WE NEED AN OPPONENT: First things first, the RedHawks need to find out who they are going to play on Friday. Miami has had success against both potential opponents, having swept both games against both Ohio and Missouri State. The Bobcats finished the regular season 9-11 overall and 6-4 in the MAC. The Bears are 6-14 overall and 1-9 in the MAC.

Miami defeated Missouri State 5-4 in Springfield on Sept. 27, and then won 8-2 Oct. 18 in Oxford. The Bears are led by junior Melissa Lantz, who has scored 17 of the team’s 44 goals this year.
