OXFORD, Ohio - Now 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play, the Miami University field hockey team is looking to improve to 4-0 in conference play as it hosts Kent State on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Miami Turf Field.
Miami head coach Jill Reeve commented on the opportunity that the RedHawks have this weekend.
"This weekend is our team's opportunity to define ourselves," said Reeve. "We have had valuable experiences leading up to this weekend no matter if the outcomes resulted in a win or loss. Competitors like OU and Kent will allow us to `let the chips fly' so to speak. I think it will be important for us to lay it all on the line to see what we are truly capable of."
Kent State is currently 1-1 in MAC play, having lost to Ohio on Sunday, 1-0, ending its three-game winning streak. The Golden Flashes have received votes in the latest NFHCA national coaches poll, and are led by freshman forward Debbie Bell who has seven goals in the past four games and has been named Division-I Player of the Week and MAC Offensive Player of the Week.
The Ohio University Bobcats are coming off of their first win against Kent State since 2001, upsetting the 20th-ranked Golden Flashes on Sunday. Ohio is 4-5 overall and 2-0 in MAC play, having defeated Central Michigan earlier last weekend. Senior Nikki Gnozzio leads the Bobcats with two goals on the season and was just named to the www.womensfieldhockey.com Honor Roll and is the MAC Defensive Player of the Week.
"I will be looking for leadership from our senior group and in the goal cage. If we play the way we are capable of, the results will take care of themselves," finished Reeve.
Miami most recently defeated Missouri State, 5-4, last Saturday afternoon. Each of the team's five goals was scored by a different RedHawk.
Kate Snyder began the game's scoring with a shot in the eighth minute of play, but was quickly followed by two MSU goals. Looking to regain the lead, Teja Kammler, Katie and Christina Brightwell, and Maggie Marcum gave Miami the advantage in the second half. Though MSU managed two more goals in the half, the RedHawks held on to their lead and their perfect MAC record.
