MIAMI'S LAST TIME OUT: The RedHawks played their most impressive game of the season this weekend at home verus No. 14 Ohio. Miami battled the Bobcats into an overtime period before Elizabeth Holtzman ended any hopes of an upset with her sixth goal of the season, which gave Ohio a 1-0 victory.
Despite outshooting the RedHawks 31-5 and taking 20 penalty corners, the Bobcats were held scoreless through two full periods by a solid Miami defense. Senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn (Davis, Calif./Davis) turned in one of Miami's finer performances by a netminder, registering a career-high 19 saves.
In Saturday's contest versus No. 12 Kent State, the RedHawks were unable to break their losing streak but were able to put some goals on the scoreboard in a 6-2 loss. Miami tallied the first goal of the game when Snedden scored her second goal of the season. Credited with the assist was senior Cheryl Iozzi (Kettering, Ohio/Kettering). It was Miami's first goal in six games.
The Golden Flashes ensued by scoring three unanswered goals in the first half. Arlette van Cleeff tallied her first of three goals at 15:48 to get Kent State on the board. Rebecca Rahaim and Megan Spurling chipped in with a goal apiece to give Kent State a 3-1 lead at the half.
Van Cleeff registered her hat trick early in the second stanza with goals at 31:29 and 28:12. Iozzi scored her first goal of the season at 9:26 to cut the RedHawk deficit to three, 5-2, but it wasn't enough as Lauren Grandinetti netted KSU's sixth goal at 5:38.
LAST TIME VERSUS LOUISVILLE: Miami used two goals off the stick of Snedden to snap a five-game losing streak, defeating Louisville 2-1 on Oct. 20, 2000. The RedHawks improved their record to 23-3 over the Cardinals.
Miami opened the scoring early in the first half when Snedden popped a penatly stroke past the Louisville goalkeeper to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. The Cardinal's goalkeeper, Christy Hersey, entered the game first in the MAC in saves (113) and second in goals against average (1.25).
Louisville knotted the game at one apiece when Lainey Habeeb scored on a penalty corner with 11:06 remaining in the first period. Keri Beckhorn and Pip Sanders assisted on the goal.
Snedden registered the game-winner for Miami at 15:28 in the second stanza when she rebounded senior Beth Young's (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley C.D.) and found the back of the net. It was her second game-winning goal of the season.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: Louisville is led by a strong youth movement in 2001 as freshman Olivia Netzler leads all MAC competitors with nine goals and six assists. Netzler tallied her eighth and ninth goals in a 4-0 victory over Kent State on Friday. Junior Danielle Barr is second on the team with four goals and three assists, while there are four others with three goals.
A big reason for Louisville's success this year has been the play of sophomore goalie, Christy Hershey. In 10 games she has allowed nine goals for a paltry goals against average of 0.88. Hershey also has recorded four shut outs in 2001.
LAST TIME VERSUS MICHIGAN STATE: Michigan State eeked out a win last year versus the RedHawks, 3-2, on Oct. 21, at Miami Turf Field. Miami narrowly missed an opportunity of knocking off the No. 19 Spartans.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Bridget Cooper at 20:14. With four minutes remaining in the first period, the Spartans' Cynthia Martin put another goal on the board to give MSU a 2-0 advantage.
Miami's Meghan Phalen cut the deficit to one with a quick strike before the end of the half.
MSU extended its to 3-1 when Maureen Halstead netted a goal at 12:40. Snedden narrowed the gap to one with her ninth tally of the season at 11:42, but the RedHawks eventually ran out of clock time. It was the RedHawks seventh loss in a row to the Spartans.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS: Michigan State has dominated opponents on the offensive end of the field with 132-68 shot advantage. Senior Bridget Cooper has found the goal nine times this season to lead the Spartans, while senior Maureen Halstead has scored seven times with two hand-outs.
VAUGHN SETS NEW SCHOOL MARK: Senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn set a school record with 19 saves against Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 28. Vaughn shutout the Bobcats for 78:50 before they were able to put away the game-winning goal. In the defeat she recorded nine saves in the first half, nine in the second and one in the overtime period. Vaughn is ranked first in the MAC with 95 saves on the year.
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOES: The RedHawks find solace in the fact that six teams on their schedule this season are ranked in the nation's top-20. Michigan State and Louisville are ranked seventh and ninth, respectively, while Ohio State rounds out the nation's top-ten. Last week Miami was defeated by Ohio and Kent State who are now ranked 11th and 14th, respectively. Early in the year Miami lost to Syracuse, 2-1, who was ranked 19th in the recent poll. Other teams on the Miami schedule that received votes in the national poll are California, Stanford and Dartmouth.
SHOTS=GOALS, GOALS=WINS: Through 11 games this season the RedHawks have been outshot by their opponents, 214-57. Consequently, Miami also is on the short side when it comes to scoring. This season Miami opponents have out-scored the RedHawks 33-7. In its two wins, Miami scored four goals to its opponents' two. Since then the RedHawks have lost nine straight contests and have been outscored 31-3.
