OXFORD, Ohio - On the heels of an impressive non-conference season that saw the Miami University field hockey team go 6-2, the RedHawks travel to Missouri State University tomorrow for a 11 a.m. CT match against the Bears.
Miami has been led in the early going by senior co-captains Elizabeth Gilroy and Danielle Gaynor. Gilroy, a midfielder, has five goals and three assists through eight games, while Gaynor boasts three goals and two assists from her back position.
All of the RedHawks have contributed to their successful start, including junior back Katie Brightwell, who was named Mid-American Conference defensive player of the week on Tuesday for her outstanding play last weekend against No. 10 Michigan State and Pacific.
In goal, Miami has three very capable cage-minders in freshman Abbey Huck, junior Kelsey Dean and senior Megan Stengel. Huck has burst onto the scene in the early going, garnering MAC defensive player of the week honors after her first two games as a RedHawk. She has 28 saves on the year and a .757 save percentage. Dean and Stengel have both seen significant action in 2008.
The MSU Bears are much improved from a year ago and have started the year at 5-3. They have posted early impressive wins over Appalachian State and two over Saint Louis.
Miami already sits at 1-0 in the MAC after winning 2-0 at Central Michigan two weeks ago. The RedHawks will look to continue that trend tomorrow against the Bears.
